Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. However, most people know it by one of its other names; cannabis, marijuana, weed, ganja, pot, and so on. The origin of the plant can be traced thousands of years back to Central and South Asia (think China and India). THC is responsible for the psychoactive effects one feels when they consume cannabis.
How Does THC Work
Everyone has what’s called an endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS controls and regulates many essential functions of the human body (other vertebrates have an ECS too). THC binds to the CB1 and CB2 cannabis receptors in the body; like connecting pieces of a puzzle. The binding produces the psychoactive effects mentioned above.
Is THC Safe?
Though THC derived cannabis is safe for use by most adults it is listed as a Schedule 1 drug per the Drug Enforcement Administration, due to marijuana prohibition in the United States. This means the government does not believe it has medicinal properties and is highly addictive; two things thousands of studies prove are not true.
How is THC Consumed?
THC can be consumed in various ways including inhalation, ingestion, or application.
Inhalation methods: Smoking and vaping
Ingestion methods: Edibles (gummies, brownies, etc.), tinctures, oral sprays, and drinkables (sodas, seltzers, flavor packets)
Application methods: Salves, lotions, oils, and external sprays

Is Cannabis Legal?
Thanks to the Marihuana Regulation & Taxation Act (MRTA) which was signed into law on March 31, 2021 in New York State the use of cannabis is legal for those aged 21 and over. However, cannabis is still federally illegal. Confusing, we know!
Where Can I Buy Cannabis?
Adults aged 21 and over can purchase cannabis in any one of New York State’s hundreds of legal dispensaries. A full list of dispensaries can be found here and of course we’d love for you to stop by and visit The Garden Club. Always ask for, or look for a certificate of analysis (COA) to learn more about the product you’re buying.
