The Garden Club is committed to making both our website and our shop on Smith Street welcoming to everyone. We design, build, and review our digital experience against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at the AAA level wherever feasible for our content and experiences, with AA conformance as our minimum bar across every page. This statement explains what we do, what we’re still working on, and how to reach us if something is in your way.
1. Standards we follow
- WCAG 2.2 Level AA across all pages and components, with AAA targets for colour contrast and focus indicators.
- Semantic HTML5 markup and a strict heading hierarchy on every route.
- Keyboard operability for every interactive element, with a visible high-contrast focus ring (no relying on hover or pointer alone).
- Touch targets that meet WCAG 2.5.5 (44×44 px) on mobile interfaces; minimum 24×24 px in dense UI per WCAG 2.5.8.
- Meaningful alternative text on product imagery, descriptive labels on every form field, and explicit name/role/value on custom controls.
- Honoured
prefers-reduced-motionacross animations, marquees, and the map beacon. - Skip-to-content link, single
<main>landmark per page, and trap-focused modals that restore focus on close. - Progressive enhancement — the site renders and is usable without JavaScript.
2. How we maintain accessibility
- Manual keyboard-only walkthroughs of every new flow before release.
- Automated audits on each pull request (Lighthouse, axe-core) with a 0-violations gate before merging.
- Colour-contrast verification of every new combination, documented inline in our stylesheet.
- Periodic manual testing with screen readers (VoiceOver on macOS / iOS, NVDA on Windows).
- Internal accessibility guidelines in our codebase (
docs/a11y-seo-guidelines.md) that contributors must read before working on a route or component.
3. Compatibility
The site is designed to work on the latest two major versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge across desktop, iOS, and Android. We test with the following assistive technologies:
- VoiceOver on macOS (Safari) and iOS (Safari)
- TalkBack on Android (Chrome)
- NVDA on Windows (Firefox / Chrome)
- Keyboard-only navigation
- OS-level zoom up to 200% and reflow at 320 CSS pixels
4. Known limitations
Some areas of the site rely on third-party services (loyalty integration, our dispensary point-of-sale, embedded maps). We work with each vendor to ensure their interfaces meet our accessibility bar, but we don’t fully control their markup. If you hit a barrier in any of these areas, please tell us so we can escalate it.
5. In the shop
Our retail location at 227 Smith Street, Brooklyn is step-free at the entrance, with wide aisles for mobility devices and a counter at standing and seated heights. Service animals are welcome. If you’d like accommodations for an in-person visit — quiet hours, an escort to-and-from the door, or anything else — call or text us before you stop by and we’ll set it up.
6. Feedback & contact
We want to hear from you. If you encounter a barrier on the site or in store, or if there’s a feature that would make your visit easier, please get in touch:
- Email: info@thegardenclubbk.com
- SMS or call: (917) 725-2698
- In person: 227 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231
We aim to acknowledge accessibility feedback within two business days and to address concrete issues as quickly as we can.
7. Updates to this statement
This statement is reviewed at least annually and updated whenever we ship a material change to the site. The date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision.
